Even though electric drum kits were first used in the 1970s, they really started to develop more in popularity in the 1980s. There was a notable shift in musical styles and fashion in the 1980s and so many of the traditional ways of making music were discarded for new and exciting methods. This meant that electronic equipment was at the front of the new wave of bands and the UK was the heart of it all. Bands like Depeche Mode and Duran Duran were battling it out at the top of the charts and would go on to become mega stars in their own right, but the introduction of electronic equipment meant that many more people found it easier to make music.New Order were definitely a band that benefitted from the use of electric drum kits and it helped the band achieve their goal of merging their indie style songs with a more dance infused beat. As the band was emerging from the ashes of Joy Division, these drum kits, ably played by Stephen Morris, helped the band become one of the biggest names in music in the era.Even though Devo had been playing music together since 1973, it wasn't until 1980 that they made their commercial breakthrough. The song 'Whip It' became a smash hit and its quirky video was perfectly placed to put the band at the front of the merging music television channels that would appear in this decade. Electric drum kits were an integral part of the Devo sound and this remains to this day. The band can still be found touring the world, wowing audiences in major venues and playing to tens of thousands of people at music festivals. Devo are a band with very few peers but they are still viewed as one of the major components of intelligent electronic rock.Another rock band that gladly jumped on the electronic phase would have to be Van Halen. Even though lead guitarist Eddie Van Halen was considered to be one of the most talented guitarists in the world, he tended to move onto keyboard and synthesiser any time he got the opportunity! The band also utilised electric drum kits during the making and touring of their '5150' album. The band eventually returned to their more traditional rock roots but their willingness to dabble introduced many fans to the new instruments and ways of making music. As the quality of electric drum kits has improved over the years, many more bands have looked on the electric drum kit as a way to enhance their sound. There are many great reasons for switching to this style of kit and portability and programmability have to be at the top of the list. The variety of sounds that are available from one of these kits opens up the range of sounds that a drummer can play, helping any band or artist to explore their true sound. Making music is all about options, and opting for an electric kit greatly increases the choices available to everyone, which is one of the important issues when making music.
