When we went to the Heron on the Lake for our anniversary, I fully expected a regular old pub meal. The decor of the place had attracted us and they had made a nice job of the old country style interior - complete with dried hops and dimmed candlelight - as many pubs have tried, and failed, to do. However I have to say I was very surprised by the quality of the food..I am a vegetarian so get used to being palmed off with frozen re-heated rubbish in most places, or piles of tasteless vegetables which are meant to pass for a meal. With the Heron the food was lovely..I can't remember the last time I could say that about a meal out! Served to a very high standard, the presentation and flavours of the food exceeded all expectations and to top it all the service was great - I'd certainly go back again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone wanting something a step above the standard pub food - but not as posh as a fancy restaurant.PS - The name of this pub is listed incorrectly - it's called 'The Heron on the Lake'....not Lakes!
On paper, the Heron is an old English pub near to a train station that is currently run by the Chef and Brewer Company; However it is much more than just the sum of its parts. It has a very good menu, and whilst containing the normal Chef and Brewer fayre, constantly steps outside these boundaries by offering a substantial specials board. The food is consistently very well put together and the menu is diverse enough to satisfy even the fussiest eaters. The main areas of the pub/restaurant are traditionally appointed with exposed wood beams and welcoming open fireplaces for the winter months. The summer offers a new dimension with the Heron having a large outside deck area extending out over the lake which is nice for alfresco dining or an evening drink (if you can ignore the half hourly trains passing by on the other side of the lake). Not a party bar by any means, but for a quiet dinner/lunch (Sunday Roast is especially good) or an after work pint of Old Peculiar look no further.
I've been to the Heron on the Lake quite a few times now. Each time I have enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. Quiet but not too quiet, the restaurant boasts a large choice of meals all served to a high standard. The service has been very good everytime I have been there. It sometimes can be a little slow, but a nice wine will make up for that!Good food, Pretty surroundings, nice atmosphere. I would recommend it.
This is not the place to go if you want a pub meal - the food is more restaurant-style and has prices to match! There is an extensive menu, including lots of fresh fish and some delicious desserts. The Heron converted fairly recently to table service, but this has slowed down its already slow service. You won't be able to eat a meal here in your lunch break unless you are prepared to chase up the staff. This is one for a leisurely meal. Staff are generally friendly and helpful, just rushed off their feet I think. You may have to wait for your meal, but I have never been less than satisfied with the food when it arrives.
This place is ideal for a nice lunch, especially in the good weather. You can sit outside by the lake, and they offer a waiter service. Quick service and good, affordable food make it well worth a visit.
